Theodore P. "Ted" Govatos
MILFORD - Theodore P. Govatos passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 7, 2014. He was 99.
He was born in Alpena, Michigan on November 25, 1914, son of the late Peter and Diamondo (Manolakis) Govatos.
Ted graduated from Milford High School where he excelled on the basketball court, the baseball field, and was captain of the football team. He spent a year at Augusta Military Academy in Georgia and graduated from the University of Delaware.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Army Air Corp serving his country during World War II.
Mr. Govatos accepted employment with Libby, McNeill & Libby in Houston, Delaware, holding the position of plant controller for 23 years, retiring from the company in 1969. After a brief period, he returned to work as the business manager for the Milford School District, a job he held for 10 years before fully retiring in 1980.
Over the years Ted enjoyed playing golf and as a dedicated alumnus of the University of Delaware, he attended many of the Fightin' Blue Hens home football games with his friends, Otis and Marie Webb, Jack and Carolyn Pendleton, and Cy and Kitty Morgan, along with many fun times with Jim and Emily Carnright.
Ted was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church in Milford and served as Church Treasurer for many years.
On behalf of the family, his daughter would like to extend special thanks to Ted's loving long time family friends and caregivers; Debbie and Woody Zook and their family for all their help over many years; Andrea, Noel and Caleb Primous for all the good times he had with them, especially to Andrea who was with she and her father in his last hours, along with Jana Hood, who never tired of taking Ted wherever he needed to go and her faithfulness to him; caregivers John Banks for all his help, Vitas Hospice, aide Claudette, his nurse Diana, and his private aides; Connie, Mitchell and Mary for their care of her father and all the personal help given to her. Last but not least, "The Liar's Club", who he spent many fun days with and for all their friendships, especially Terry Young.
In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Elizabeth "Beth" Govatos in 2007.
He is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Govatos Webb of Lake Park, FL; and a son, Peter T. Govatos of Milford.
A celebration of Ted's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 N. Church St, Milford.
A private interment with military honors will follow the services in the Milford Community Cemetery on North Walnut Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ted's memory may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 191, Milford, DE, 19963.
