Milford — On February 27, 2023, Roy L. Smith went peacefully home to be with the Lord.
He was born on December 12, 1929 in Stanfield, NC to the late Vander and Leether Smith.
From 1953-1955, Roy served in the United States Army at Fort Jackson, SC and Tageau, Korea. While in Korea, he served with Special Forces as an NCO in the dental corps.
Roy received an Associate Degree in 1950 from Gardner Webb College. In 1952, 1958, and 1962, he received multiple degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: B.A./Chemistry, M.A./Organic Chemistry, PhD Organic Chemistry. He concluded his studies with a postdoctoral appointment at Washington University in St. Louis.
In the late 1960s, Roy moved to Delaware and worked as a chemist at the E.I. Dupont Company in Wilmington and at the L.D. Caulk Company in Milford. While living in Milford, Roy was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford.
Once a star baseball player in college, Roy had a lifelong interest in sports and physical fitness. He enjoyed the time that he spent in his later years at Lifestyle Fitness Center and Planet Fitness in Milford, and he cherished the friendships that he made at both places. His hobbies included auto mechanics, personal finances, and listening to classical music.
Roy was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Alice. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Moyer and her husband Tim; his son, Douglas Smith; and his grandsons, Ethan and Luke Moyer.
The family will receive visitors at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford from 5PM to 7PM on Friday 3/10 and from 12 noon to 1PM on Saturday 3/11 at First Presbyterian Church of Milford, 101 S. Walnut St., Milford, with a funeral service at 1PM. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
Interment is Milford Community Cemetery.
