Maurice C. Barnes, Sr.

MILFORD - Maurice C. Barnes, Sr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 22, 2014. He was 86.

Maurice was born in Cambridge, Maryland on December 10, 1927, son of the late John W. and Essie Marshall Barnes.

He graduated from Cambridge High School with the Class of 1944.

Moe was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War aboard the USS Missouri and the USS Wedderburn.

He was employed as a system gas operator with Delmarva Power for 26 years, retiring from his position in 1983.

Moe was a very active and dedicated Mason. He has held many different roles within the Masonic Blue Lodge as well as its appendant bodies. He joined Temple Lodge #9 A.F.&A.M. in Milford in 1989 and later became the Master of that Lodge. Moe was very active within York Rite Masonry holding the titles of Past High Priest Joppa Council, Knights Templar, Red Cross Constantine and just recently in 2013 was the recipient of the Cross of Honor from the Knights Templar. He also pledged his support to Scottish Rite Masonry and The Tall Cedars of Lebanon Evergreen Forest #49. He also served as a Past Commander of St. Andrews #2, Past Commander of the VFW Post #3 and Past Commander of The American Legion Post #3. Moe loved to serve and did it graciously.

He was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn J. Barnes, a son, Carl Barnes, Jr. and his wife Penny of Wilmington; a daughter, Carol Barnes Lenik and her husband John of Greensboro, NC; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2014 with an American Legion and Masonic service to be held at 7:00 p.m. at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the funeral home.

A Masonic graveside service and burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Moe's memory to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy, Dover, DE, 19901 or to Temple Lodge #9, P.O. Box 256, Milford, DE, 19963.
