Milford – ON May 7, 2018, Marvin B. Hitch passed away at Delaware Hospice.
Mr. Hitch was born on November 21, 1921, in Milford, to the late Roscoe and Reba Hitch.
Mr. Hitch honorably served our country in the Army and the Army reserves, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major.
Marvin was employed at Rumpstich, Brown P. Thawley, Hammond Cadillac, Burris Foods, City of Milford, and Draper King Cole.
He was a Life Member of the Carlisle Fire Co., Inc., joining July 1949 and remaining active until his recent illness. He served on numerous committees and held the positions of President, Vice President, Chief Engineer, Board Member, and Fire Chief; for which he was Chief for 10 years.
In 1992 he received the honor of Engineer with the most alarms as well as being recognized as the Elks Fireman of the year. In 2010 he was recognized as Chief Emeritus of the Carlisle Fire Company as well as recognized as the Kent County Firefighters Association Fireman of the Year. In 2015, he was recognized with sixty-five years of service.
He lived by a simple philosophy that pertained to all challenges: “If you do it, do it right or don’t do it at all.”
Mr. Hitch was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine C. Hitch and his son Kevin Hitch.
He is survived by his son, Craig R. Hitch, his daughter, Tracy Hitch-Lilly of Milford, his granddaughter, Jade Hitch-Lilly (who Marvin always called Jitterbug), and his sister, Elizabeth Shea.
A viewing will be held at the Carlisle Fire Department on Saturday May 12, from 10AM – 12PM, with the funeral at 12PM. Interment is Milford Community Cemetery.
