Lillian Amelia (Amy) Davis Blight

Lillian “Amy” Blight, age 95, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2017 in Elkton, MD.

Lillian was born in Milledgeville, PA, daughter of the late Gates C. and Ida Campbell Gilmore and the stepdaughter of the late Emilie Mitchell Gilmore.

She attended two one-room country schools with her mother as her first grade teacher from whom she inherited her love for learning. She graduated from Westtown Friends School, Westtown, PA and Keystone Secretarial School, Swarthmore, PA (now Chubb Institute, Springfield, PA). She graduated from Beacom College in Wilmington after WWII in 1947.

Lillian joined the USN WAVES in 1943 and for three years served first at NAS in Norman, OK, as SKD 1st Class IC, followed by service at NAS Honolulu, Hawaii. While still in Hawaii, she was able to board the USS Battleship Missouri when it returned to Pearl Harbor from Japan after the signing of the Peace Treaty.

Lillian went on to raise her family of four children in Severna Park, MD, and later in Rehoboth and Lewes where she was very active with her family and community. Her career included working as a secretary for the head of the Legal Department of Penn Mutual Fire Ins. Co in West Chester, PA, and at Williams Insurance Company in Rehoboth.

Her favorite pastime included working on the family genealogy from Scotland, volunteering at the local library and reading.  Her grandchildren called her “Marmie” from her favorite book Little Women.

Lillian also played the piano and the cello in the Newark H.S. Orchestra. She enjoyed listening to music throughout her lifetime and had a vast record collection that included classical, big band, ragtime and Scottish clan music.

Upon retirement she moved to Milford and Rehoboth to be near her children where she was a member of Christ Church. She was a lifetime member of the WAVES National and First State Waves Unit 10 Wilmington. She was also a member or US Clan Morrison (Gilmore) and the Clan Campbell (NA).

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Humphreys Davis III and Edward Stevens Blight; brother, Rex D. Gilmore and sister, Helen Thorne.

She is survived by her sister, Joanne Elkan of Fl; three sons, Randolph E. Davis ( Robin) of Lewes; Gilmore Davis (Pu Sirhikand) of  Thailand; Samuel H. Davis (Carolyn) of  Oneonta, AL; a daughter, Emilie Mitchell Davis of Chesapeake City, MD; two grandchildren, Samuel ( Leah) of  Odenville, AL; Alexa of San Francisco, CA;  and a great granddaughter, Harper of Odenville, AL.

Services and burial will be held privately.
