Jeannette Buell Isaacs
REHOBOTH BEACH - Jeannette Buell Isaacs was a resident of Sussex County, Delaware, from her birth on September 3, 1922, until August 7, 2015. She and her sister Carolyn were raised by their parents, Olive Roach Buell and John Roland Buell, with an appreciation of community, agriculture, and nature. Until the Storm of '33, family and friends would lay a straw road out to vacation at their old former hotel in Fenwick Island, and would later spend time at their family cottage in Bethany Beach.
Jeannette matriculated to the University of Delaware and during a freshman mixer, met her future husband of fifty-four years, Simeon Pennewill Isaacs. While he served in World War II, Jeannette taught school in Newark. Upon moving to the Isaacs family farm near Milford with Penn, a many generation farmer, her respect for nature increased and was shared with her own children, their cousins and friends. During harvest season Jeannette and her children often brought a picnic supper to Penn in the bean fields. Once the crop was in, Penn and Jeannette could be found in Rehoboth Beach under a beach umbrella chatting with friends, teaching their children and grandchildren how to read the waves, and playing hours of Scrabble.
Following Penn's death, Jeannette moved to their cottage in Rehoboth Beach. Many hours were spent playing Rummikub with friends on the beach, playing Spat with her grandchildren at home, playing Bridge with friends in town, and sculpting clay at the Rehoboth Art League. Most recently Jeannette lived comfortably for several years at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford.
Throughout her life Jeannette contributed to and benefitted from Selbyville High School athletics, Milford Sewing Club, Milford Bridge Club, Milford Historical Society, Milford Museum, the Delaware Humanities Council, the Rehoboth Museum, the Village Improvement Association, the Rehoboth Art League, and the Delaware Nature Society. A lifelong Methodist, Jeannette was a member of Salem, Avenue, and then Epworth United Methodist Churches.
Jeannette's family includes her children, Carol I. Hastings (Barry, deceased), Edgar F. Isaacs II (Denise), Pat Isaacs (Steve Conley), niece Susan L. Steele, grandchildren, Jaime, Eli, Joy, Anna, Kai, Caleb, David, and Mark, great-grandchildren, River and Allie, other dear nieces and nephews, and exchange student daughter, Maryvonne Popot.
Jeannette's family and friends are welcomed to attend a graveside service on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Milford Community Cemetery, 700 N. Walnut Street, Milford. A gathering will follow immediately after at Abbott's Grill, 249 NE Front Street, Milford.
In Jeannette's memory, we encourage you to play a card game with someone you love.
