James A. Carnright, Sr.
MILFORD - James A. Carnright, Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford. He was 94.
He was born in Saugerties, NY, on July 7, 1920, son of the late Albert and Ethel Wemple Carnright.
Jim graduated from Flushing High School in 1939 and with some money sewn inside the pants he wore; he boarded a train at Grand Central Station to further his education in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama, where some of his fondest memories were made. He was a member of the cheering squad and made head cheerleader in his senior year and was inducted into the prestigious "A" Club. He graduated in 1943 and has been a proud BAMA alumni ever since.
After college, he was drafted and reported for duty in the United States Army serving his country as a Lt. during World War II stationed mainly in Germany.
Upon returning from active duty, he met and married the love of his life, Emily, worked as a business assistant with the Brooklyn Navy YMCA, returned to college at New York University to earn his Master's Degree in Education, and moved to Milford to accept a teaching position at Milford High School. A couple years later, Jim was approached to apply for employment with the L.D. Caulk Co in Milford. He accepted a position in the Sales Department and retired with the title of Product Manager for Dental Laboratory Sales after 32 years of service.
Jim was a kind and gentle man with an endearing sense of humor. Many conversations would end with "that reminds me of a good joke" and he told them well! He found an interest in writing poetry in his later years which led to the publishing of Life, Love & Memories, and compiled a book of his Memoirs. He traveled to many destinations in his lifetime but his favorite get-a-way was always the family cottage in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, and the love of this little piece of heaven on earth has been handed down to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Milford.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Emily K. Carnright.
Jim is survived by his children; Diane C. Rogers and her husband Perry, James A. Carnright, Jr. and his wife Barbara, and John C. Carnright and his companion Christine Benson, all of Milford; three grandchildren, Perry W. Rogers, Jr. and his wife Tara of Milford; Jeffrey Carnright and his wife Dafne of Milford, and Amy R. Allen and her husband Alex of Columbia, MD; and four great grandchildren, Madison R. Rogers, Dylan Carnright, Eric Allen and Bryce Allen.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, 6486 Bay Rd, in Frederica.
Burial will follow the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Delaware Veterans Home Fund, 100 Delaware Veterans Blvd, Milford, DE, 19963, in appreciation of the exceptional care given to our beloved father while a resident there, or to First Presbyterian Church, P.O.
