George Gilbert Smith

Of Bridgeville, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital in Milford. He was 83.

Mr. Smith was born on December 13, 1927 in Cleveland, Tennessee, son of the late Jess and Elizabeth (Swanson) Smith.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving his country during World War II.

Mr. Smith was employed by the City of Baltimore as a mechanic in their Fleet Division for 17 years, retiring in 1994.

George served as a Boy Scott leader for many years during the time his sons were involved in scouting. In his leisure time, he enjoyed flying model airplanes, gardening, fishing, camping and boating.

Mr. Smith was a member of the NRA and the Moose Lodge in Edgemere, Maryland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Viola Murrelene Smith in 2008; two brothers, Billy Smith and Joel Smith and a sister, Edith Wilson.

He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law; Roger Smith, Randall Smith and Russell and Tammy Smith, all of Bridgeville; a brother, Jess Smith of Florida; two sisters, Alma Brown and Doris Ramsey, both of Mineral Bluff, GA; seven grandchildren; Wendy, Samantha, Russell Jr., Patricia, Tatjana, Natasha and Amanda and six great grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held privately.

The family has requested memorial contributions to NRA Processing Center, P.O. Box 420648, Palm Coast, FL, 32142.
