Christopher White

Christopher J. White

Long time Pownal, Maine resident, Christopher J. White, 72, dedicated father, serviceman, fire fighter, and community leader died peacefully Thursday, February 18, 2016 in Milford, Delaware, after a long illness.

Born to Douglas A. White II and Lois Belle Wilkins in Washington DC, Mr. White was raised by grandparents and his aunt in District Heights, MD.  He graduated from Suitland High School in 1961 and attended Prince Georges Community College.

Beginning in 1965, he served four years active duty in the US Navy. He continued his Naval career in the Reserves, serving a total of 28 years. Some of his duty stations included Iceland, Scotland, England, Azores, Spain, Sicily, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Mr. White retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He spent his career as an Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator. He logged over 3,000 flight hours as a crewmen on the P-3 Orion aircraft.

In 1969 he worked for Gly Construction and M&P Construction in Maryland. In 1971 he married Lin (Persel) White.  In 1973 they moved to Maine, settling in Pownal. Mr. White served 25 years for the Pownal Volunteer Fire Department, retiring as Deputy Chief. He also served on the Town of Pownal Planning Board, School Board, and Budget Committee. He was a member of the Maine Chapter of Construction Specification Institute, American Legion Post 83, the Fleet Reserve Assoc., and a life member of the Naval Reserve Assoc.

Mr. White worked for Wright-Pierce Engineering in Topsham, Maine for thirty years before retiring in 2003.  Mr. White continued working on a few projects after his retirement from Wright-Pierce until illness prevented any additional work. In 2014, Mr. and Mrs. White moved to Milford, Delaware to be closer to family.

Mr. White is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Linda Carter of College Park Maryland.

He is survived by his loving wife Lin of 44 years, daughter Kate White of College Park, MD, daughter Rebecca Connelly, her husband Chris, and grandson Oscar of State College, PA, and his brother Douglas of Bealeton, VA.

Services and burial with military honors will be held privately at Arlington National Cemetery.
